In the year 2020, Wellness Africa Foundation, an NGO committed to SDG 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), conducted Community Health Needs Assessment across representative Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Poor utilisation of services as a result of out-of-pocket payments, non-existent ambulatory services and inadequate infrastructural facilities, including Manpower shortage, were part of the key results from the survey. Going by its year-on-year budgetary allocation to health, the State government alone cannot address the conundrum bedevilling our health sector, let alone the PHCs. Thus, for the first 4 years after the survey, Wellness Africa Foundation took the strategic imperative to spotlight these challenges before critical stakeholders, including ministry of health, development partners, traditional institutions and community leaders, by facilitating a series of Roundtable Dialogue on Community Health, and a seminar on the acute manpower shortage in the health sector.
Building on past initiatives, Wellness Africa Foundation is embarking on the Advocacy for the Revamp of PHCs in Ogun State project with the goal to leverage media and technology to advocate state and non-state actors to revamp and strengthen PHCs across Ogun State. Among others, the impact of this 8-month PHC Revamp Advocacy Project will be an effective primary healthcare system that will complement the government’s effort to accelerate Universal Health Coverage, reduce maternal and child mortality as well as other forms of preventable deaths from diseases of public health concern, such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, and other infections, as well as neglected tropical diseases. The Advocacy for the Revamp of PHCs in Ogun State project is financed through the grant from the Nigeria Youth Futures Funds.
This project received funding support from NYFF & LEAP Africa.
In Nigeria, Governments at all levels cannot meet the needs of PHCs. Thus, the PHC Advocacy Revamp project is to galvanise support from stakeholders, chiefly the private sector, philanthropists, donor agencies through a community-driven approach.
The Advocacy for the Revamp of PHCs in Ogun State ties directly to the ‘Adopt a PHC Policy’ of the Ogun State Government.
Non-state actors can complement the effort of state actors in the provision of Infrastructure, Equipment, Human resources and Funding for strengthened, functional and effective PHCs across the State.
With the recently adopted "Hub and Spoke" healthcare model in Ogun State, the revision of PHCs in the various communities will facilitate more effective patient referrals to secondary and tertiary health facilities and improved coordination of care.
One of the steps towards accelerating the attainment of UHC include establishing a primary healthcare system that is socially inclusive and responsive while also guaranteeing equity.
Primary Health Centres (PHCs) are the focus of this initiative, and the aim is to enhance healthcare delivery in local communities by assessing the PHCs and offering constructive feedback on their infrastructure and services. We invite volunteers - individuals, CSOs, and community-based organisations - to provide their thoughts on these healthcare facilities by clicking the link below.

"PHC is a whole-of-society approach to health that aims at ensuring the highest possible level of health and well-being and their equitable distribution by focusing on people’s needs and as early as possible along the continuum from health promotion and disease prevention to treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care, and as close as feasible to people’s everyday environment" WHO and UNICEF.
